Anglers take advantage of calmer conditions

Sunday, the wind velocity dropped enough that anglers, waiting on the sidelines (I should say shorelines), were able to hit their favorite spots. Those who took advantage of the calmer conditions did fairly well.

ImagePatrick Polk and his 12-year-old son, Kevin, braved the winds on Saturday to fish the North Jetty. Kevin caught and released a 36-inch bull red and landed the fish using a trout rod with light line. Polk asked that we remind everyone to properly resuscitate large redfish and drum before releasing them. He observed two oversized reds floating, belly up, near the jetties.

Members of the West End Anglers Fishing Club endured Saturday’s wind and ended up catching and releasing 28 black drum weighing a total of better than 800 pounds. Anglers Cory Holman, Cody Holman and Coe Parker landed all of the fish and observed a number of other boats not having any action. They suggested we point out that using crab as bait and fishing the tide changes works best for big drum and reds.

We have yet another report of good action from Capt. Paul Stanton, Aqua Safari Charters. Sunday afternoon, Stanton hosted the Grace Fishing Group from Grace Community Church in Houston. Ronnie Williams headed the group of eight, all Friendswood residents. Their catch included 14 large drum, seven bull reds to 40-inches and seven oversized black drum to 55 pounds. Williams caught the largest red, which was a beauty, with 33 spots. Soon, after it is mounted, it will be a conversation piece in his den or office. Crab was the bait of the day.

The lighter wind accelerated the beachfront action, as schools of feeding sharks, sheepshead, whiting, gafftop, pompano, jackfish, reds, drum and sand trout were chasing baits.

Richard Belleau, 61st Street Fishing Pier, reported lots of nice whiting being caught, along with bonnethead sharks, sheepshead and gafftop. Reports of crabs feeding around the rock groins have been received as well.

I want to remind everyone that the Mainland Chapter of the CCA will hold its annual banquet Friday evening at the Nessler Center in Texas City. This year’s event begins at 6 p.m. and includes a crawfish boil and Cajun dinner. Silent and live auctions, along with raffles will be part of the evening. Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door. For tickets or information, call 409-925-5607.
