  • Can I stick a Redfish??

The last time we took the flounder boat out we ran across several Redfish in the shallows within reach of our giggs. My question is: Is it lawfull to gig a Redfish? I've seen people stick Sheepsheads while Floundering, but I'm not sure about Redfish.

    Thanks

    From the TPWD website:
Gig: Any hand-held shaft with single or multiple points, barbed or barbless.
    • May be used to take NONGAME fish only.

It is not legal. You can't bowfish or gig 'gamefish' as defined by TPWD. Neither Sheepshead or Flounder are in the TPWD definition.

        From TPWD:

Gig:Any hand-held shaft with single or multiple points, barbed or barbless.
        • May be used to take NONGAME fish only.

Nongame Fish: All species not listed as game fish except endangered and threatened fish which are defined and regulated under separate rules.

Game Fish (includes hybrids or subspecies of fish on this list):
        • Bass: Guadalupe, largemouth, smallmouth, spotted, striped, white, yellow
        • Catfish: blue, channel, flathead
        • Cobia
        • Crappie: black, white
        • Mackerel: king, Spanish
        • Marlin: blue, white
        • Pickerel
        • Red drum
        • Sailfish
        • Sauger
        • Seatrout, spotted
        • Sharks
        • Snook
        • Spearfish, longbill
        • Swordfish, broadbill
        • Tarpon
        • Tripletail
        • Trout: brown, rainbow
        • Wahoo
        • Walleye

But I couldn't find the list of gamefish. Thanks for posting that up. Hmmm... shouldn't a flounder also be a gamefish? One of the big three, no?

Thanks guys. I knew you would have the correct answer.

Guess I'll have to practice my reply:

No, Mr. Game Warden, that redfish already had those holes in him when I caught him.

JUST KIDDING of course. We always keep it legal.

                        Thanks again!!!

This brings up another question: Can you gig and hook & line fish from the same boat on the same day??

We are planning to fish during the daylight hours, then flounder gig after dark.
