  • Howdy!

I just found this site when I was searching for some information on fishing the west bay. The only place I've fished in this area is the diversionary canal, and that mostly on foot. However I recently just got a boat, hence I've been doing some research on where to fish and what to watch out for as far as navigating the different areas.

Myself and my brother in law are going out this evening to try to catch some flounder and maybe a red or two in the diverionary and I may build up the nerve to make my way out to the ICW. I'd really hate to hit a reef though. Guess you have to learn the area somehow though!

I'll post back tomorrow with hopefully some pictures of some fish! Just wanted to say hi and introuduce myself.

Be careful getting from the diversionary to the ICW. There are some pipes marking the way as you come out but it is touchy if you haven't been that way.

Welcome to the site! Coming out the the DC,probably wouldn't be too bad with the Bull tides! But it depends on what your boat drafts,How deep it rides under throttle! Run up a Google earth image and study the whole area! Generaly I dog leg right out past the largest pole and out to the ICW! If not comfortable dont do it,You can idle out also and feel yor way off the bottom if you have tilt or a trolling motor! Good Luck and be careful!

So the trip was a flop. I can't really say how the fishing was, because we didn't get to do any. A mile down the canal my motor decided to strip the hub in the prop. Didn't run aground in the canal, but had some issues awhile back in dickinson bayou with some mud flats. I thought all was fine, but a few minutes into the trip the motor started free spinning. Luckily I was able to idle it back to the ramp. Welcome to boat ownership I guess! Maybe next time.

And the boat runs about 2 ft deep give or take.
