  • Gafftop City

9/30 West end trip. Bait was thick in the surf, cast netted a few dozen finger mullet and fished the surf for a couple hours, long rod style. 2 reds, and a lady fish to show for it. Took the remaining mullet , jumped in the boat and headed for a quick couple drifts behind Pointe West. Birds were diving, storms were at a distance and conditions looked good. Drifting mullet behind the boat on fish finder rigs, it was non stop Gafftop action. Not what I was looking for, but plenty fun. Grab the kids and have at it, easy catching. In 5/6 foot of water, probably a mile north of the Point West shoreline.

          Thanks for the report!

Since you mentioned "Birds working" and Gafftop I guess I'll share a bit of info for you new guys. I've fished WGB and Chocolate all my life and as everyone knows when you are running out to go fish your favorite spot at the crack of dawn you are both looking....as well as smelling...for slicks and birds.
Sometimes you will see both and think "Man, that has to be a mess of Trout under those birds the way they are working!"
Only to get in front of the school with a good drift going and then start pulling in slimeballs one after the other under those birds non stop!

Not that I don't like to keep some good sized "GassJackets" as I call them, but as I have pointed out numerous times to those that need their nose educated...there is a marked difference in the smell coming off a slick that is produced when Trout are feeding hard and when Gafftop are doing the same. It takes a while, but once ya get the smell down you can tell the difference well before you decide to work those birds.

BTW, Gafftop are some of the BEST EATING fish in our waters! I always check the raw water washdown on my boat before I start pulling them in of course as I don't want to let that slime stay in the boat of course!!
