Friday Beach Bum Bailey, Unclehandy, Blackbeard & I will be assisting Milk Jug out at SLP in creating a flounder pen. We have numerous large coolers and construction netting that we are trying to acquire to build a 15' x 15' "pen" to hold the flounder until the morning where we can them transport them using either Mike's new Shoalwater or my rig whichever is easier...

We are needing volunteers to help assist in catching the flounder or to hangout and keep an eye on the fish so no poachers come along :D

:guns: :guns:

I am going to be coming down after work and won't be to the island until late like 8-9 PM. I will make a flounder round up run using my net instead of gig to help catch any size flounder to be used in the restocking program once I get down but hopefully there will be others available to help out and assist.

Let us know if you can help out late and early morning Saturday... I think there maybe a couple of us camping out there... If you need a tent let me know I have one you can use.

I will be at SLP....on Friday morning fishing with my father in-law

Saturday- I will be there as well....fishing for the round -up

I can take the flounder over to the round up via my tanks with O2....
(Two 162qt coolers with Oxygen)

You guys might be able to simply put the live flounder in your live wells with the water in-take on.....and bring them over in the morning to my coolers...

This would limit your work you guys have to do with building the pens..

Is boyds open again? If so I'll go buy an oxygen system for my big igloo...

MuddSkipp, what are the details for Satuday? When do you need us there helping out etc.?

I want something that can handle 40GA Livewell.

Change of plans on my end. It looks like I MAY get to go catch a few flat fish for this thing after all, my party just canceled for Saturday. If I don't get another trip I will be out there fishing for a few myself. I will know for sure Friday evening.

Sweet deal, I'm ready to become a flounder cowboy haha!

I'll be getting off as early as I can on friday and heading down to SLP to begin constructing the pen. My plan is to get it done by nightfall, then head to all my gigging holes on the E. side and see what I can net. Once I try all the spots I will bring any fish back to SLP.

Mabey some of ya'll will be around to guard the pen and any fish in it while I am gone?

Looks like a high tide for Friday evening, with it dropping considerably by late Sat. morning. Hopefully this will be OK for looking for them. Gotta make sure any penned fish don't get beached by morning :D

Might as well pray for low wind too

AP- they probably didn't like the 40 degree prediction for Saturday :D

My current plan is to either pick up the flatties from MilkJug early Saturday and transport them via truck to FM 2004 bridge... then take them the rest of the way by boat... Or unless someone else with more knowledge of the area wants to take them thats cool... I'm trying to get an oxygen system for Friday so hopefully I'll be able to lock one down and we can transport the fish more efficiently and keep them alive and perky better than a battery operated bubble machine...

Milk- Leaving the GF at home I told her its going to be cold...

Will be down for an evening at SLP... I'll bring fire wood :D

The place I'm thinking of has a nice drop off to knee deep and doesn't fluctuate too much with the tide... or we can toss them in a cooler w/ the oxygen system :D

Also, Mudskipper talked about how he was able to turn in smaller male flounder, <14" but we would not.

Should I go ahead and net any small ones I find? I heard that TPWD needs quite a few for breeding. Does a fish in a pen count in your possession? "I didn't know it was there Mr. Warden, I just built the pen around it" :D Then mabey Mud could put them into his net before he leaves to turn them in.

I am netting everything if its a baby I'm grabbing it... The more the better! I'll even throw in a bunch of fingerling mullet and watch them feed :D

Hehe, all night floundering is a spartan event, not for the ladies :D

Good deal, we should be able to round up plenty of firewood from all the debris.

Sounds like a good spot. Sand bottom? The dropping tide might actually make it easier to catch them in the morning, which was a concern of mine. Worse case, if it drops too much, we just move them into the cooler.

Shoot, we may just put them into the cooler if the pen construction ends up being harder than expected.

Coe, out of curiosity, does the spot have any deeper areas adjacent? May bring a rod and sand spike and see if I can't get a red or two over the evening.

Hey don't fatten them up too much or we may end up keeping them for the table! :D

WestEndAngler
November 10th, 2008, 03:49 PM
Yes it does... get to be around waist deep there are shallow areas throughout and drop offs that come up to above your waist... The area where we will be "chilling" is ankle deep and just on the other side of the sand bar is the knee deep water where we should construct the pen if we decide to do that...

If not I think we can get away with big coolers and toss them on the back of the boat w/ trailer and haul them off to the launch at SLP have someone take them for us...

If its a calm day I will drive my rig to chocolate if its rough I'll be driving my car and launching up the bayou...

Guys,

Just to be clear.....I will have a permit to retain undersized flounder from TPWD....

You can be ticketed for retaining them......so if you choose to keep them for the tournament, be aware of the regulations....

Or you could simply bring them to me at the SLP in the morning....I will be under the bridge on the Galveston Side........

What will be the best way to keep fish alive?? I have no live well or baitwell on my boat and am wondering what will work best. Not looking to spend a whole lot of money. I doubt I can even catch any fish, but just in case, what are yalls ideas?? I will be launching at 2004, but from west bay to 2004 it may be an issue. Thanks.

Keeping flounder alive during the fall is easy.

If you have a livewell, simply keep the water circulating and if you are fishing from the bank, an ice chest works great. Simply put in plenty of water, use an aerator or oxygen bottle if you have one and change out water as much as possible.

I am going to rig up my bilge pump and coolers Friday night at my place and have it suck fresh saltwater and recirculate / let it overflow all evening incase then "PEN" doesn't function properly...
