Surf cams are your friend

But really...the surf won't be ready for a while yet...for consistent catches of specks. April is about the earliest i've ever had a good wade in the surf...and it was late april at that. Spring is usually very windy, and several years you won't be able to wade the surf until sometime in July.

I've got my eyes open for you. I work at the top of one of the taller buildings on Galveston. I can stare at the gulf or channel and be tempted to bail out of my responsibilities :D

Also, I noticed that today the gulf was 70F. I've heard people talking about that being the temp when it really gets going.

I can't wait. Last year sucked to wade the surf, well atleast May and June. Seemed like every day the wind was blowin 15-20. Hope there are a few days in May that are nice so I can pull out that 30in star tourny winning trout :D

You're right 70 is the magic number. It will increase to about 83-84 degrees in the summer and even more in certain spots. Not only are there more fish around, you dont freeze your marbles fishing!

I have it on good authority that healthy trout are showing up already. Not the sows yet and not big numbers, but they are here.

I'm predicting that this N. wind coming in this Friday should knock the waves right down.

Sunday afternoon to early next week I'll out on the beachfront. I don't think the specks will be around, but I'll bring tackle just in case and focus on dead-shrimpin.

cast some spoons instead. lots of macks and few trout are in the surf already. ;) the water is just a bit too cold for me though. :D

Man, there were macks busting bait all over the place last week when I was fishing the surf. They were hitting really small minnows, I even got a clear look at a few of the macks when they hit close to the yak.

They broke off my dead shrimp once when I was bringing it in, so I tried a few silver spoons I had. Not a hit, even with the flouorocarbon leader, and I know they saw it because they were in thick.

I think they were focused on tiny bait and the spoon was too big. I'm thinking a small silver jig or shiny crankbait with a cork for casting distance might be the trick. I was able to catch a few macks early year with that set up when they were hitting small bait.

Gilbert
March 26th, 2009, 12:28 PM
they were hitting 3/4oz silver spoons off the surfside jetties. there is alot of small bait fish. I think they are glass minnows and small shad. Its about that time of year for them to start showing up.

mirrodine XL and mirrominnow in clear are killer baits to be throwing right now also.

The best colors for me last year and most years in the surf are Mirrorlures 51 & 52 series in CH11 & the Norcross CH.Even in sandy water these produced all summer. As soon as the waves drop hit the surf no matter the water color or temp.It is plenty warm for specks I catch trophys in 54 degree water every year.

I'll have to give those slow-sinking mirrolures a shot. With 9 hooks on each you think I'd be able to hang a few....

Do you ever throw topwaters in the surf? I started trying that last year, but only got 1 trout a few times.

How about fishing the first gut? Do you start at the first gut before daybreak like people say is best?

superspooks in any chrome color works for me in the surf. big ol topwaters to keep the little fish off. Always start in the first gut. My dad never gets wet and he always catches quality. He said he's too old to be fighting waves and getting tired. My dumb butt won't listen and will fight it out on the second bar with the sharks.

too many bozo's fishing in there now. Wish they would have never put up that new bridge. My and my dad would hammer the trout and flounder back there year round. Now that place looks like a parking lot almost every day. :( if you get a late start, don't even bother trying to go down there, its already full.

nah, I am talking about the bozo's that set up on the bank and fish with 20 rods soaking bait. I'll be down there after work during the week. I don't do weekends over there. I usually take off here at 4 and in the water by 5-5:15. I like to fish about 50-100 yards away from the mouth though. I am going to BR this saturday with my son after his game. opening day. I need to get my topwater box from 007's boat before he starts chunkin them and I don't seem them ever again. :D

I like skitters too. I've caught some good fish in the surf on the mullet pattern (i think that's what it's called). It has a black back, chrome sides and a white belly. But then again i've been next to people catching them on the pink ones so who knows lol. Maybe they just like that subtle clicking noise they have

Milkjug
March 27th, 2009, 02:18 PM
Hehe, I think skitters are more of a loud banging than a subtle click

My first topwater trout came off of a pink skitter. Real man's lure there :D

I use skitters in the bay only. Superspooks/top dogs/x-raps in the surf. especially if its a little rough. My fav is the ED special though.

Ive also been looking at this buoy for water temp, winds, and wave height.

http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=42035

This says 67 because it's a lot further out, but that's where the trout are coming from right?

Cool graphs of the history and stuff too.

Looks like the surf is going to be down from this wind for the evening. I just got some bait to fish it tomorrow morning, before it kicks up again :D

Getting excited... Looks like tomorrow may have a small flat-beachfront window to fish in the morning. Weather people predict high NW this afternoon and tonight and low SE tomorrow morning. Never fails though, got meetings tomorrow morning. I hope they are too early and the surf is money in the afternoon when I can escape.

I looked at the gulf this morning and the waves are already pretty low and the front hasn't even really hit yet :D
