Went out yesterday yak fishing in W. Bay. Spent the whole time fighting the wind and waves for 0 fish. I had the gigging gear in the truck so I decided to give it a shot against better judgment since I was already halfway down the island.

Thanks Coe for letting me ditch the yak at your place for a few hours.

The clarity on the S. shore was great despite the wind. Luckily the tide was up as you could only gig a few dozen feet away from the shore before the wind chop made it too hard to see.

I walked around for 2 hours, saw a really big ray right off the bat. Towards the end I started seeing what I like to see... Clusters of fresh beds from keeper fish. Stuck 3 decent ones and passed on one that was ~15".

I guess high winds are pretty workable if you are in a protected area and the clarity is still good. At least it made the skeeters work harder too

Looks like a 17, 19 and a 20"...yum!
Winds should change from a pumping south to a light north starting Friday but I have the day shift this weekend.

Thanks Bert, but the biggest went 18" max. "Decent" fish... bigger than "keeper", but not "good" or "bragger" sized.

I may go for a second dose this evening, I've been forgetting the thrill of seeing that flounder shape appear out of the darkness.

I guess I must be hurling. It's nice to see the big one and think that's a common size in relation to the tailgate but then again it's a product of my sustained close point relation with a prized flesh I love to take but yet so wrongfully denied by Kahuna winds this spring!

Nice flounder. Sounds like it's time to get out there and do some gigging.

Similar experience last night. I have today off, and didn't want to fight the winds to fish so I did a late trip last night.

Winds were 20 knots and the tide was down but it was still manageable. Gigged protected shoreline and got 4 to 18", passed on one that was close.

I'm less concerned about high winds now since I know I can just find the right areas. It is still more effective on calm nights, but I may just go to sleep early now in favor of fishing the surf the next morning.

No pics. They just looked like 4 flatties with holes in their gillplates.
